During this time he became a member of Phi Alpha Delta, a legal fraternity. Jim was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1958.
Soon after graduating, Jim moved to Dallas with his wife and two young children, Will and Jim, Jr. In Dallas he became an associate and then partner with Turner, Hitchins, McInerney, Webb and Hartnett. His sons, Will and Jim, also joined the firm. Donna Spencer began a working relationship with him at that firm that continues to this day.
In 1982, Jim left Turner, Hitchins to start his own firm, James Hartnett, P.C. His sons, Will and Jim Jr., joined the practice. In 1988, Jim and his two sons changed the name of the firm to The Hartnett Law Firm.
