After graduating from Cistercian Preparatory School in 1983, Jay received his B.B.A from the University of Texas and then attended law school at Southern Methodist University. In 1990, he was admitted to the bar and became an Associate in his father and
brothers' firm.

Jay became a partner in The Hartnett Law Firm in 1997. He is a member of the Dallas Bar Association and the State Bar of Texas, and is a Founding Lifetime Fellow of the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers Foundation. In 2004, Jay was named a "Texas Rising Star" by Texas Monthly Magazine, as one the best lawyers in Texas under age 40. Jay is the current Chairman of the Probate, Trusts and Estates Section of the Dallas Bar Association (2007-2008).
